Some people prefer taking a gap year for travel or work before enrolling in university. In this essay, I will discuss both the advantages as well as the disadvantages of this trend before evaluating whether it is a good decision for their learning process.

People who often take a gap year after finishing 12-year educational programmes are largely persuaded by its numerous benefits for their future career and goals. First and foremost, travelling or working can beneficial for their learning outcomes as they offer them more opportunities to experience their desirable jobs. Those take vocational training after school such as a car mechanic or an engineer can have more practical experience for these professions. When studying at school, learners can only access to theoretical knowledge through books, documents, or lectures and rarely have any hands-on experience on their professions while those who participate in such courses can spend their quality time to work directly with them. Through a period of trials and errors, they can gain more practical experience that they cannot learn at university. After a gap year, they can comeback to school and learn more effectively as they are equipped with a basic foundation for their fields. As a result, they can achieve better academic performance at school and find an occupation easily after graduating. For those who love travelling, they can expand their horizons since they are exposed to different people with various cultural backgrounds. Via this real-life experience, they can improve the ability to deal with direct problems and develop better interpersonal skills when they live in different places or nations. Therefore, when these learners enroll in university, it is easier for them to manage an academic life effectively without burning out or stressing. However, a gap year is not always advantageous for learning process, especially for those who do not have a good sense of discipline. Although deciding to have a job before studying university can contribute to a better learning outcome, it also might prevent learners from academic achievements. After a long period of working, students might find difficult with learning since they have given up them for a year or more. Before a gap year, students get used to suffer peer pressures which can encourage them to perform better. However, when they are left by their peers, there will be a lack of motivation as well as competition with peer groups. As a result, they might give up learning easily and drop out school since they are not resilient. Another significant problem is finance. Apparently, travelling is not cheap, it even costs more than learning. When school leavers spend much money on travelling, the worse result is that they cannot gain any experience or even become too penniless to enroll in university. Considering about a long term consequence for this development, while students have good academic performance can get a stable job with satisfied salary, those without qualification and degree can only make a living by doing low income jobs. As a result, taking a gap year not only hinder individual from learning effectively, it can also contribute to a worse life in the future.

In conclusion, a gap year might be beneficial for learning process as it offers students with practical experience in their professions and fosters interpersonal abilities in university. However, it might contribute to financial difficulties and deplete students’ motivation due a long period of being in a different environment. From my perspective, learners should consider carefully before taking a gap year as it is not always suitable and optimal for everyone, especially with those do not have a good sense of independence and discipline.
