The given line graph illustrates the proportion of households in the UK owning private cars, which is divided into four different categories, from 1971 to 2007. Overall, it is evident that the percentage of families in the UK who owned one car remained the largest throughout all periods, while there was an upward trend in the figure for households that owned two or more vehicles. In addition, the proportion of people who had no car witnessed a moderate plummet. During the first year, the figure for families owning no car recorded the largest, nearly 49%, which was 5% higher than that of one-car owners. In spite of experiencing a slight increase, the percentage of households having three or more cars remained stable in the first five years. Meanwhile, the figure for two-car owners gradually grew from about 9% to 15% in five years. Thus, there was a plummet in the proportion of no-car families in the first five years, approximately 10% lower than the initial figure. In the next five-year periods, while the figure for households having one car and three or more vehicles remained unchanged, about 43% and 3%, respectively, the percentage of households without car recorded a continuous decrease, approximately 25% in 2003 and remained unchanged to the final period. In contrast, there was a considerable increase in the proportion of two-car owners, about 10% higher from 1987 to 2003 and experienced a similar trend to that of no-car owners in the two final years.
