Bar charts compare the number of urban and rural residents in Europe who were affected by four distinct types of noise namely traffic, train, aircraft and industry by day and night in 2007. Overall, the number of urban residents who suffered from the noise from different resources was generally higher than that of rural residents. In addition, daytime recorded a higher number of residents who were affected by the noise, compared to the night. Significantly, traffic was a common reason for the noise in both regions; meanwhile, industry contributed to the minority of the reason for the noise. In urban areas, 64 million of residents had to deal with the traffic noise by day, compared to only 48 million people by night. In terms of the noise from trains, the number of urban residents being affected by this type of noise by day was 2 million higher than that figure by night, 8 million and 6 million residents, respectively. 4 million residents suffered from the aircraft noise by day, which decreased to only 1 million of people by night. Moreover, the number of urban residents being affected by the industrial noise by night was a quarter as high as that by day, 1 million and 0,25 million residents, respectively. The number of rural residents who were affected by the traffic noise by day was 34 million and was 10 million higher than this figure by night. In rural areas, only 6 million residents faced the noise from trains by night , while there were 8 million people who suffered from the same issue by day. The number of residents being affected by the noise from aircraft by night, about 1 million residents, was half of that by day. Most importantly, rural residents were not affected by the noise from industry.
