In today’s digital era, it is often believed that the growth of online shopping will eventually drive all brick-and-mortar shops in urban areas out of business. While understanding the reasons behind this thinking, I completely disagree with it, as physical shops still offer unique benefits that online platforms cannot fully replace.

Admittedly, supporters of this view argue that shopping online provides greater convenience. This shopping method enables consumers to purchase products anytime and compare prices more easily thanks to the wide variety of options available online. Consequently, it is putting mounting pressure on small traditional shops that struggle to compete with e-commerce platforms in price and variety. However, this argument is not entirely convincing. This is because consumers tend to inspect and evaluate products in person to decide whether they meet their needs, as important factors such as colour, quality, material may not be accurately assessed through a screen. Thus, physical stores are likely to remain essential and are unlikely to disappear completely in the future.

On the other hand, conventional stores continue to play a crucial role in ensuring consumer satisfaction. Offline stores not only sell products but they also offer an opportunity for people to socialize. People tend to view it as a source of entertainment as they can meet and have a chat with their friends while buying items they need. As a result, this can enhance their shopping experience and bring a sense of joy. Additionally, Shoppers can ask shop assistants for sound recommendations through face-to-face interactions and receive immediate responses, enabling them to make more informed decisions. For instance, while China is home to Taobao, one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms, many shopping malls and supermarkets continue to thrive and attract a large numbers of consumers annually.

In conclusion, despite the fact that online shopping brings numerous advantages making shopping more efficient, I would argue that it cannot completely replace traditional stores in the long term, as both forms of shopping complement each other.
