Opinions are divided as to whether viewing television programmes has an adverse or positive impact on children. Although television watching undoubtedly has a number of disadvantages, I firmly believe that it plays a crucial role in the development of children due to several reasons.

Admittedly, excessive television viewing has certain drawbacks that merit consideration. First and foremost, it can lead to a deterioration in children’s health. This is especially concerning as many youngsters often spend a substantial amount of time watching television programmes and hardly engage in physical activities, meaning that they risk developing serious diseases such as obesity or diabetes. Another noteworthy disadvantage is that unsupervised children can be exposed to violent television content, potentially leading them to develop misguided beliefs. Given the widespread dissemination of inappropriate visual content, these individuals may normalise irresponsible behaviour or even engage in unlawful activities, posing a serious threat to the community.

However, I am convinced that moderate television viewing yields more significant long-term gains. To begin with, children can gain a deeper understanding of current affairs around the world through television, thus broadening their knowledge considerably. This is particularly important for those from underprivileged backgrounds as they can obtain up-to-date information without having to travel great distances, rendering television watching a time-saving option. More importantly, watching television programmes fosters children’s critical and analytical thinking as they often have to process information independently. In other words, they can develop essential soft skills that are needed for their future jobs, thus enhancing their career prospects and promoting their professional growth in the long run.

In conclusion, although excessive exposure to television content has certain disadvantages, including negative health outcomes and misconceptions among children, I would maintain that watching television programmes in moderation expands young people’s knowledge and strengthens their soft skills, making it advantageous for children’s personal development overall.
