As a result, a decreasing number of schools require children to practice manual skills. Although this can bring several benefits, I believe that the drawbacks clearly outweigh the advantages.

Admittedly, the reduction of handwriting can bring certain advantages. Since some digital devices such as laptops and smartphones have become indispensable, students have gradually become familiar with online classrooms and typing assignments for homework. Therefore, children can be better prepared in terms of digital literacy, which provides much more opportunities for their future careers. Additionally, the act of simply copying the information from an internet website can make it faster to take notes of the information students wish to learn, which helps them save time for other activities.

Meanwhile, the disadvantages of neglecting handwriting skills are much more significant. Although schools can equip their students with digital skills, the reliance on those devices can increase if hand writing is replaced, posing a threat to the cognitive development of each student. Moreover, despite the speed offered by digital devices, neglecting the importance of handwriting skills can deteriorate students’ ability to memorize the lectures. It is clear that summarizing lessons helps students to arrange the information they learn logically and effectively, which makes the process of revision more useful.

In conclusion, although focusing less on handwriting skills can create more room for digital skills, the decline in manual writing skills can threaten a child’s cognitive growth. Therefore, I believe the drawbacks of this trend outweigh the benefits.
