The rapid advancement in transportation has considerably transformed how people travel. Some inventions of new means of transport are bringing about various benefits for communities; however, besides the advantages, numerous negative effects need to be taken into account.

Undoubtedly, modern transportation technologies help people commute more quickly and effectively. This is because transport systems such as high- speed trains or metro networks have been enhanced with modern technologies, making them move much faster than ever before. Thanks to this, people can save a lot of time and spend their time on different tasks like work and studies. Furthermore, advanced transportation also helps optimize traffic flows and reduce traffic congestion. This makes people feel more comfortable commuting and have higher productivity at work and in their studies. For instance, in some megacities in China, the expansion of metro systems has cut down on the average amount of traveling time by about 25,3 minutes per day. Workers don’t have to face unpredictable traffic jams, minimize stress, and can take advantage of their time on the subway to handle work online. This helps them start their workday more alert and focused.On the other hand, this development in transportation creates some environmental issues. As the number of vehicles increases, the requirement for fuel consumption grows, leading to pollution in the process of exploiting and transporting fuel. Moreover, vehicle exhaust releases harmful pollutants into the atmosphere, resulting in the deterioration of air quality, which causes some respiratory illnesses such as asthma or lung cancer, and so on. In Vietnam, for example, thousands of people have come down with respiratory diseases in recent years. This problem has raised alarms about air quality.

To sum up, although the development of transportation technology makes it easier and more efficient for people to travel, it also has negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, how to balance the advancement of technology and the protection of the environment is one of the essential issues that we have to pay much attention to if we want to have sustainable development.
