Introduction
Body
Admittedly, there are a sizable number of motives behind this inclination, chief of which is the parents’ common belief that success has increasingly become much more challenging to achieve because competition is fiercer than ever. This is mainly because admission to prestigious universities and high-paying enterprises require excellent academic performance and a wide range of skills; thus, parents feel compelled to push their children to outperform their peers. Evidence can be seen in the case of many children being forced to participate in extra classes after school from an early age to improve their chances of entering elite universities in the foreseeable future. As a result, children undergo greater pressure to cultivate outstanding academic results throughout their educational processes.
I firmly believe that setting higher standards for children to succeed is more of a negative development because constant pressure can inadvertently affect children’s psychological well-being. This is mainly because when children are expected to meet unrealistic demands to be successful, they may develop chronic stress, unexpected anxiety, and a fear of failure, causing a vicious cycle that they cannot escape. A recent study has shown that a student who studies late every night to satisfy parental expectations may experience burnout and lose interest in learning. Therefore, the pursuit of perfect standards from parents can be a sharp knife killing their children’s emotional health, gradually deteriorating both academic performance and overall quality of life.
Conclusion
In conclusion, imposing high expectations on children is the primary culprit leading to their psychological issues, and I am of the opinion that this phenomenon brings about unpredictable ramifications in the long term.
