The chart illustrates the number of shop closures and openings in a particular country between 2011 and 2018. Overall, both shop closures and openings witnessed a dramatic decline, with closures showing more pronounced fluctuations throughout the period compared to shop openings. At first, the number of shop openings was higher than that of shop closures, starting at about 8,500 in 2011, while the number of shop closures was much lower, with nearly 6,200. Meanwhile, in the following years, the picture of the data was significantly changed, although the number of shop closures experienced a slight decrease to approximately 5,900, it surpassed the figure for the openings, just over around 4,000. Over the following two years, shop openings experienced a sharp increase to about 6,200, almost catching up with the figure for closures, establishing a peak for almost 7,100 in 2013 before slightly declining to about 6,300. The year 2015 witnessed shop closures plummeting to the lowest point, with approximately 500, while openings also reached a rapid decrease to 4,000, nevertheless, openings once again higher than closures. In addition, there was a significant increase to about 5,100 in the number of shop closures in 2016 before it remained stable in the final year. In contrast, shop openings gradually fell to 3,000 at the end of the period after it remained relatively stable in both 2016 and 2017.
