Introduction

There is growing concern about cities around the world becoming increasingly similar which can have far- reaching consequences. This essay will discuss the reasons for this trend and evaluate whether its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.

Body

A variety of factors contribute to this trend, one of the major reasons is globalization. Globalization makes cities increasingly similar by promoting economic and cultural integration across countries. For example, to promote interaction and economic growth, international chain stores such as Starbuck, McDonal’s are appearing on almost major cities. This leads to a sense of familiarity for people when visiting and experiencing these services in other cities, even if it is their first time there. Another potential reason involves advances in construction technology and modern urban planning. Cities tend to be built to optimize space and provide convenience for residents. Therefore, high-rise buildings and glass skyscrapers have become common features of many major cities, leading to similarities between cities around the world.

This trend can bring benefits for people, especially for tourists and foreigners. When arriving in an unfamiliar city, encountering familiar brands can help them feel safer and adapt more easily. Beside that, the addition of more modern infrastructure improves people’s living standards, allowing people to exchange goods and use services more easily than ever before. Although the standardization of cities offers undeniable conveniences, I believe the negative repercussions it has on cultural diversity are much more profound. This is because it can cause loss of cultural identity. Many cultural values are altered, simplified or mass-produced for tourism and promote profit, losing their original authenticity and sacredness. In addition, entertainment media, cuisine and lifestyles from Western countries are spreading globally, gradually replacing habits and indigenous customs. For instance, in the younger generation, curiosity and a preference for novelty from outside can lead to mechanical imitation, disregarding long-standing cultural heritage. As a result , the custom and local lifestyle are fading and losing their identity.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the reasons for the similarities between cities in the world can stem from the international integration, the development of technology and modern architecture. Although this trend can bring benefits for people such as conveniences and improved living standards , I believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
