People think that governments should increase the cost of fuel for cars and other vehicles to solve environmental problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Introduction

A school of thought holds that the authorities should raise fuel prices for any vehicles with an aim of addressing environmental issues. While increasing fuel prices can deter car usage to some extent, I believe that investing in public transport and green technology is a more sustainable long-term solution.

Body

It is understandable why many people believe that increasing fuel costs is considered a viable strategy to discourage residents from excessively using diesel-driven cars. This is due to the fact that the large amount of toxic emissions and greenhouse gases released from a vehicle poses a severe threat to the atmosphere. And when a large proportion of the population makes use of privately owned cars, it would spread more toxic fumes into the air, and, in turn, deteriorate air quality. However, such a measure is not totally effective as a whole. Indeed, there are still numerous individuals who have to use their own vehicles for different commuting purposes; hence, they would likely continue using them, regardless of costly fuel prices. For example, many commuters in rural regions rely solely on personal vehicles due to the absence of reliable bus or train networks. Therefore, this cannot completely prevent residents from using their cars.Instead of making petrol more expensive, governments should implement other practical alternatives, such as investing in developing green technologies and traffic transportation. To begin with, the government can allocate funds to conducting research to promote cleaner energy sources or electric vehicles as this would not only help reduce the harmful fumes released from cars but it would also allow individuals to use their private vehicles freely. Additionally, authorities should invest in improving public transportation systems. Granted, by building more metro lines and buses and improving the sevice quality, residents can recognise the convenience and affordable prices, which would encourage inhabitants to be willing to switch from private cars to public transport. As a result, this would eventually lead to less fuel consumption and lower released emissions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although increasing the cost of fuel for cars could solve environmental problems to a certain extent, I firmly believe that this is not the best solution, and such issues can be minimized by spending public funds on public transportation systems and cleaner energy sources.
