Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, are the main source for many countries. However, some nations are using alternative energy such as solar power and wind power. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Word count: 350

Introduction

Various nations still rely solely on non-renewable energy sources as the primary energy backbone, yet others start shifting to renewables. While this transition can create short-term challenges, I contend that it represents a beneficial development overall.

Body

Critics argue that adopting clean energy can unexpectedly undermine reliability and exert upward pressure on prices . Since solar and wind are intermittent, the risks of electricity shortages in peak hours are increased. Moreover, this transformation comes along with upfront investment, including grid upgrades, backup capacity or sufficient storage, which threaten financial stability and electricity cost. However, those demanding problems can be addressed by a diversified energy mix. Thanks to demand-response programs and efforts in economies of scale that ultimately balance demand and supply of citizens, as well as reduce the costs of electricity. Meanwhile, despite the convenience and economical prices, fossil fuels require hidden costs, resulting in pollution, public health and climate damage.

More importantly, it is clear that this shift brings pragmatic and long-term benefits in terms of environmental advantages and health concerns. Priority of renewables effectively mitigates the exhaust emissions, which reduce notably in global carbon footprint, slowing climate changes. Besides, air quality can be substantially improved, providing a fresh and clean atmosphere that protects individuals from respiratory illness and extreme weather. Furthermore, adopting clean energy facilitates independent energy security and economic sustainability. It is evident that solar and wind energy are available worldwide which means a variety of nations are able to make use of renewables as domestic goods. Otherwise, they might heavily rely on importing fossil fuels from overseas which potentially creates price shocks and geopolitical tensions. Costa Rica is a prime example of renewable energy utilization, with the country using electricity primarily from renewable sources, accounting for 98% of its total electricity consumption.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is clear that green energy adoption triggers upfront demanding challenges. However, those issues can be acceptable due to several long-term benefits in public health enhancement as well as solving environmental concerns, while using renewables also mitigates the reliance on imported carbon-based fuels. Thus, this shift is ultimately a potentially positive development overall.
