The bar chart illustrates the percentages increase in the population of some urban areas in the world including the prediction in 2030. Overall, urban populations in all areas rose sharply over time and were predicted to keep rising until 2030. Latin America made up the highest urbanization rates, followed by the figure for the whole world. By contrast, Africa and Asia remained lower percentages and show similar patterns of growth. The urban population of Latin America increased sharply from 42% in 1950 to 69% in 2000 and is projected to reach a peak at 80% in 2030, the highest figure on the chart. The global average followed a narrower pattern, growing from 30% to around 47% between 1950 and 2000, and is anticipated to reach 60% in 2030. The remaining two areas have much lower proportions. In 1950, Africa was the smallest category with just 12%, but then in 2000, it surged to around 39% and is forecast to record at 50%, more than four times its initial figure. Asia shows the same patterns with Africa, starting at small percentage with approximately 15%, then strongly went up to 39% and is expected to reach 56% in 2030.
