The maps illustrate how Australian art galleries have transformed since 1950. Overall, the art galleries witnessed significant changes, with the addition of new art sections and the removal of the courtyard. In 1950, there was a courtyard at the top of the map, opposite its entrance, between which was a room for sculpture. On the left hand side of the sculpture, a coffee shop was located at its top and below it was a space for temporary exhibitions, which was next to a bookshop. On the other side of the sculpture, there were rooms for arts of different eras and regions, including Early European Art, Middle European Art and Australian Art. At present, the courtyard has been removed to make way for new sections, namely Children’s Art school, Australia Aboriginal Art and Australian Art, which used to be situated at the bottom right of the sculpture. Additionally, the old café has been made smaller to make room for a toilet on its left. Finally, a new area for Asian Art has been established where the Australian art gallery was formerly positioned in 1950.
