The line chart illustrates the figures for foreign visitors coming to the UK for three different purposes: business, holidays and meeting friends and relatives at five-year intervals from 1989 to 2009. Overall, all categories showed an overall upward trend throughout the period. In addition, business and meeting friends and relatives both reached their peak around 2009 before experiencing a slight decline, while the latter showed the most significant growth. Holiday dominated the chart in the first half of the period before being surpassed by business in the middle point of the chart. In terms of the most popular purpose in the first half of the period, holiday registered a figure of about 6.5 million visitors in the first years, after which it rose markedly to its peak of roughly 9 million around 1995. After a plunge in 2004, this figure returned to its starting point before recovering to its peak of approximately 9 million in the final year surveyed. As for the remaining purposes, business began fairly high at 5 million in 1989, then fell slightly to roughly 4 million around 1994 before surging to approximately 6.5 million around 1999. Despite a plateau, this figure rose continuously to its peak and spontaneously intersected with holiday at about 8 million in 2007, followed by a dip to about 7 million in 2009. Meeting friends and relatives showed the most significant growth, rising markedly from just under 3.5 million in 1999 to 7 million around 2007, after which it fell slightly to about 6 million in the year 2009.
