In many societies, parents are placing increasing pressure on their children to excel academically and personally. This trend is largely driven by intense competition and high parental expectations. Although such pressure may motivate children to achieve better results to a certain extent, I believe it is an overall negative development because it can damage their mental well-being and hinder their personal growth.

One of the main reasons why parents put pressure on their children is the increasingly competitive education system. Many parents believe that achieving high grades in high schools and entering prestigious universities are essential for securing a successful career. As a result, they expect their children to devote most of their time to studying and participating in extracurricular activities in order to outperform their peers. Another reason is that many parents have unrealistic expectations of their children. Some hope their children will achieve goals that they were unable to accomplish themselves, while others compare their children’s achievements with those of relatives or classmates. Consequently, children often feel that they must constantly meet these expectations in order to gain their parents’ approval.

Despite these intentions, I believe this trend has more negative than positive consequences for children. Firstly, excessive pressure can seriously damage their mental well-being. Constantly worrying about academic performance and the haunt of disappointing their parents may lead to stress, anxiety and a fear of failure. Over time, this psychological pressure can reduce children’s self-confidence and even affect their overall happiness. Secondly, putting too much pressure on children may prevent them from developing their own interests and independence. Instead of exploring subjects or hobbies that they genuinely enjoy, many children are forced to follow the path chosen by their parents. Therefore, they may become less creative and find it difficult to make important decisions on their own in adulthood.

In conclusion, increasing academic competition and unrealistic parental expectations are the main reasons why many parents place excessive pressure on their children. Although this may motivate some children to achieve better academic results, I believe it is an overall negative development because it harms their mental health and limits their personal growth.
