＋It is often argued that young people who commit serious offences should receive the same punishment as adults criminals. While I acknowledge that this approach could be considered in some aspects, I firmly believe that giving young person harsh punishments is extremely inappropriate.

Admittedly, there are certain reasons why punishing juvenile and adults offenders equally may seem fair. Firstly, serious crimes inflict the same level of harm on victims regardless of the offender's age. The suffering and loss endured by the victims and their families do not diminish simply because of the immaturity of the perpetrator, thus giving teenagers lighter sentences could feel deeply unfair for those affected, thereby alleviating the public trust in the justice system. Furthermore, applying equal punishment may play a crucial role of deterring other young people. Acquiring that they would face the entire weight of adult consequences makes teenagers think twice before committing serious crimes, whereas light sentences may send the misleading message that youth is a shield against accountability.＋

However, I am convinced that these arguments are outweighted by more significant considerations. To begin with, adolescents's brains are not fully developed, which means they likely cannot judge right from wrong as clearly as adults can. In particular, since the region responsible for decision-making and impulse control is still maturing during the teenage years, young people often act on emotion without fully grasping the long-term consequences of their actions, so holding them to the similar standards as adults is inherently unfair. Moreover, rehabilitation programmes tend to be more effective for young offenders than imprisonment. Because teenagers are still accumulating knowledge and shaping their identity at this stage, they are much are responsive to guidance and correction, and initiatives that provide therapy and vocational training can help them reintegrate into society and avoid reoffending in the future.＋

In conclusion, although equal punishment may bring about communal equality and act as a deterrent, I contend young offenders deserve a different approach that focuses on rehabilitation rather than harsh sentences.
