The following line graphs illustrate the changes in the numbers of male and female prisoners in a European nation over a 90-year period, starting from 1911. Overall, what stands out from the graph is that the figure for male prisoners experienced an upward trend, whereas female prison population showed a downturn, despite some minor fluctuations throughout the period in both figures. Additionally, the population of male prisoners was the highest over the period, while the reverse was true for women. In detail, starting at just under 20,000 in 1911, the number of male prisoners stayed the same until 1921. Then, it witnessed a contraction to approximately 10,000 people after a decade, before it increased steadily to around 20,000 individuals by 1961. After that, the data for male convicts registered a significant growth to nearly 45,000 prisoners in the final year, remaining the highest population, although some fluctuations occured between 1961 and 2001. Meanwhile, only more than 3,000 women were sent to jail in 1911, which was nearly seven times lower than that of men. As time went by, the figure for women dropped considerably to its bottom at approximately 500 people over 3 decades, before it fluctuated with an upward trend to more than 1,500 people by 2001, yet still being the lowest.
