Thanks to the development of the technology, communicating has never been easy as it is today. However, while many people assert that reduces interaction between people, others claim that it promote communication. This essay will scrutinize in both views before giving my personal opinion.

On the one hand, technology reduces interaction between people as it slowly erodes human empathy. Having familiar with text and messages on their phones and gadgets, many people, especially teenagers, are beginning to forget many crucial elements of communication. Those elements, such as empathy, eye contact, tone of voice and body language, play a key role in transferring messages both through verbal and non-verbal ways, which never appear in texts. Furthermore, social media further worsens this issue. These websites encourage people to present curated, idealized version of their lives, which will be used as a scale to decide whether they should interact with people around them or not.＋

On the other hand, technology also plays a key role in stretching relationship over long distance. In fact, many calling apps, such as Zalo and WhatsApp, offer a valuable moment for many overseas students to meet their families online without having to return to their homeland , which reduce the loneliness and increase motivation in learning journey. On top of that, social groups chat online are places for people to meet up and make new friends. For instance, Strava is a physical activity recording app, which offers a wide range of activities, ranging from cycling, running and swimming. But it also creates a forum for people with the same hobbies, where they can meet up in real life and exchange experience in order to create a healthier community. Not only Strava but many other social apps also give its users a chance to promote their relationship, both web-based and off the grid.

All in all, technology is responsible for the isolation by overlooking non-verbal cues and forming filtered self. However, technology also enhances social interaction through overcoming geographical distance and creating social groups. In my opinion, users have to strike the balance between benefits and drawbacks of technology to ensure the effectiveness of technology.
