Opinions are divided on whether parents ought to spend time reading or telling stories to their children or whether there is no need for this as children can independently entertain and educate themselves through books, television or movies. From my perspective, although there may be some minor advantages to the latter view, I strongly believe that the benefits of the former far outweigh those of the latter.

On the one hand, it is understandable why some people encourage children to read books or watch TV and movies by themselves without parents. One reason is that doing so may enable young people to develop their cognitive and logical thinking, as they may have to independently learn to comprehend the content of the books, videos and movies. As a consequence, throughout this practice, children may expand their horizons and develop personal skills, improving academic performance and achievement. Furthermore, doing so may help children develop independence, as they would be exposed to educational and entertaining content by themselves without any support from their parents. Therefore, children may learn how to solve problems and acquire knowledge independently.

On the other hand, I strongly believe that parents reading and telling stories for kids is far more beneficial. One of the major advantages is that doing so may strengthen family bonds and bridge the generation gap, as they can spend quality time with their family. As a result, not only do children feel loved and cared for but doing so can also create opportunities to communicate, share emotions and build trust between family members, which may strengthen family bonds. Moreover, it enables parents to control and supervise the content of the stories children are exposed to. Since the young generation lacks the maturity to distinguish between harmful and age-appropriate content in books and stories, parents can guide them to understand positive values and develop appropriate social behavior from an early age.

To conclude, even though children reading and watching independently may have certain benefits, I maintain that parental storytelling is more valuable for children's overall development.
