Introduction

In this day and age, due to a fear of failure, a large number of youngsters are unwilling to take part in any competitive sports which require the participants to push themselves to the limit and compete with one another. As a result, it is widely assumed that such sports competitions should be prohibited with a view to protecting young people’s feelings. In this essay, I am against this perspective despite acknowledging the reasons for it.

Body

Admittedly, advocates of banning competitive sport competitions typically argue that such contests might leave a long-lasting negative impact on teenagers’ feelings and make them lose faith in their lives. This will ultimately prevent them from taking part in any competitions or even challenging themselves in new areas. As this problem continues, the younger generations are unlikely to live a fulfilling life, where they may find it challenging to step out of their comfort zone rather than freely doing what they prefer. Additionally, some students also have a fear of being judged or criticized by their parents or teachers when their performance is under their expectations. This, in the long run, would directly lead to some mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety or chronic stress. However, these aforementioned problems can be managed through a supportive environment where a collaboration among schools, teachers and parents are undoubtedly pivotal. The adults shoulder the responsibility to encourage their children to follow their desired plans and pursue their goals.

Nevertheless, I am far from agreeing with the foregoing perspective because when participating in competitive sports, young people can have a chance to foster critical skills, such as: teamwork abilities, communication or problem-solving skills, which are very crucial in their future life. Therefore, if students are not well equipped with such important life skills, they might have difficulties in dealing with unexpected difficulties, which let them fall behind their peers who have enough interpersonal skills needed. Moreover, competitive sports competitions have encouraged the children to set future goals for themselves to achieve. To be more specific, when they have a clear ambition, they would have the motivation to practice on a daily basis and improve their physical abilities. This has also taught them to be more independent and resilient when facing challenges and achieving their goals. Compared with those who are unwilling to participate in sports contests, young participants are likely to do more exercises and lead an active lifestyle. In light of these two benefits, it is understandable why young individuals should take part in more competitive sports competitions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, despite the benefits of prohibiting sporting events, I contend that banning these activities would be an inappropriate solution, given their advantages in nurturing some social skills and teaching them resilience when pursuing their goals.
