The line graph compares the average number of hours needed by four car manufacturers to produce a vehicle in the US between 1998 and 2005. Overall, production became faster for all four companies by the end of the period. General Motors began with the longest production time but reduced it steadily, while Ford first became slower before improving sharply after 2001. Toyota and Honda were consistently the fastest manufacturers, with both finishing at the same level. In 1998, General Motors required about 32 hours to produce a car, the highest figure on the graph. This then fell almost continuously, reaching around 28 hours in 2000, 25 hours in 2002, and finally 20 hours in 2005. Ford followed a different path. Its production time rose from roughly 28 hours in 1998 to a peak of about 31 hours in 2001, before declining steadily to around 22 hours by the end of the period. Toyota and Honda recorded much lower figures throughout. Toyota fluctuated only slightly, moving from about 22 hours in 1998 to 23 hours in 1999, then remaining close to the low twenties before ending at 20 hours in 2005. Honda showed a similarly stable pattern, starting at around 21 hours, dipping to about 19 in 1999, and then rising modestly before also falling to roughly 20 hours in the final year.
