The pie charts compare the percentage of eight different categories of waste disposed of in a particular country in the years 1960 and 2011. Overall, paper accounted for the largest proportion of waste in 1960, whereas food became the largest category in 2011. While there was an increase in the figures for food, plastic, wood, and metal over the period, those for paper and textiles declined. Meanwhile, the figures for glass and green waste remained unchanged. In 1960, paper was the most common type of waste, accounting for 25% of the total. Textiles came next at 17%, followed by food at 12%. The figures for green waste, metal and plastic were similar, at 9%, 8% and 8%, respectively . Meanwhile, glass and wood garbage figures represented by far the lowest percentages which was one-fourth of paper at 4% and 5%, correspondingly. In 2011, the proportion of food experienced a dramatic jump, from 12% to 21%, surpassing paper to become the largest category of waste, followed by a similarly significant rise in the figure of plastic, from 8% to 18%. There were slight increases in the figures for wood and metal, rising from 4% to 8% and from 8% to 9%, respectively. In contrast, decreases were recorded in the percentages of paper and textile waste, falling sharply from 25% to 15% and from 17% to 11%, correspondingly. With regard to glass and green waste, the figures remained stable over the period.
