The advantages of the spread of English as a global language will continue to outưeigh its disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Introduction

English has become the main shared language of international business, science, education, and travel. I largely agree that the advantages will continue to outweigh the disadvantages because a common language allows people to exchange knowledge and opportunity on a scale that would otherwise be much harder to achieve.

Body

The clearest benefit is practical communication. People from countries with no language in common can use English to study together, conduct business, share research, or work across borders. This is especially important in fields such as medicine, technology, and aviation, where information must travel quickly and accurately. English also gives individuals access to a much wider world of education and employment. A student from a small country can follow an international course, apply for work abroad, or communicate with experts without first learning several different languages. In this sense, English does not remove every barrier, but it lowers one of the most important ones.

However, the spread of English is not entirely harmless. Smaller languages may gradually lose speakers when parents believe English offers their children better opportunities. Since language carries memory, humour, and ways of understanding the world, its decline is more a change in vocabulary. English can also create inequality, because native or highly fluent speakers may appear more capable even when they simply express themselves more easily. Yet these problems do not require the rejection of English as a global language. They require stronger protection for local languages and clearer distinction between using English for international communication and allowing it to replace people’s cultural identity. Individuals can speak English to the wider world while still thinking, creating, and living in their own language.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the spread of English brings real cultural and social risks, particularly for smaller languages and less fluent speakers. Nevertheless, I believe its advantages will remain greater because it gives people a shared tool for learning, cooperation, and mobility.
