It is widely believed that one solution to environmental issues would be for the governments to raise petrol prices. While I consider that this might be an effective measure, I would argue that other practices may have greater impacts.

On the one hand, a sharp rise in the cost of fuel plays a critical role in tackling climate-related concerns. If national authorities imposed taxes on petrol, this would address two major problems. Firstly, in terms of private cars, motorists would limit the number and the length of car jounneys to compensate for the extra expense. Governments would then be forced to expand and upgrade public transport provision, as people still need to travel to work, to study, and to shop. Additionally, from the perspective of freight services, more goods would be transported by rail rather by truck. Both these two measures have a strong impact on reducing vehicle emissions and minimising the greenhouse gas effect. On the other hand, while the rise in fuel prices might be an useful stopgap measure, governments should adopt transport policies, which would be far more effective and practical in the long term. To illustrate, the local councils in London have already introduced a congestion charge to all vehicles visiting the city centre in order to prevent traffic jam during rush hours. They use the money raised to invest in improving transport infrastructure, enabling residents to travel much easier and decline the frequency of traffic accidents. Furthermore, introducing free bus and train passes would be a feasible approach, since public transport usage could eliminate exhaust fumes and severe pollution, resulting in improved air quality and a fight against global warming.

In conclusion, increasing the prices of fuel for cars and other vehicles is an useful way to deal with ecological problems. However, I believe that other measures should be taken to ensure the sustainability of environment and to make the most of their efficiency.
