The diagram illustrates the layout of a contemporary landfill used for disposing household waste. Overall, the man-made hole consists of a draining system with a tank and a series of pipes, a layer of clay and synthetic substance, and a seal made out of clay. During the construction phase, a trapezoidal-shaped hole was excavated in an area of natural rock. Then, a series of drainage pipes is installed and connected to a lower drainage tank. All of the infrastructure is covered inside a mixture of clay and synthetic substance to prevent water from entering the surrounding area. When the landfill is in use, household trash is dumped into it in large amounts. A cuboid pipe is built on the top of the tank in order to allow leachate to traverse towards the tank, after which the waste will enter the disposing phase. Finally, the hole is sealed with a layer of clay to prevent any leakings of toxic gases. Instead, these gases will be emitted through a blue pipe, allowing them to be safely released into the air.
