Essay

The diagrams illustrate the changes that took place in a town called Bridgetown between 1700 and 2000. Overall, the town had experienced substantial urban development over the 300-year period. Residential areas were introduced, the transport network was expanded, and the castle was repurposed as a school. Meanwhile, the marketplace, woodlands, and bridge remained largely unchanged. In 1700, Bridgetown was a small settlement with a marketplace located to the northwest of the river. A single road crossed the river via a bridge, connecting the northwestern and southeastern parts of the town. To the northeast stood a castle, which was adjacent to a woodland, while extensive farmland occupied most of the southeast areas. By 2000, the town had been modernized in several aspects. The most notable development was the appearance of built-up areas to the southwest of the road. In addition, a bypass was introduced to divert the traffic. Furthermore, a railway line was erected across the northeastern part of the town, making a great improvement in the transport infrastructure. Another significant change was the shift in land use of the castle, which had been rebuilt as a school in the same place. Although the farmland had been reduced, the marketplace, woodlands, and bridge remained in their locations and status.
