Provided is a line chart illustrating how many jobs were available in four different sectors in the US economy from 1960 and 2020, measured as million jobs. What is most striking when looking at the data is that manufacturing and agriculture provided fewer jobs over time, whereas retail and healthcare experienced the reverse trend. It is also notable that manufacturing remained the largest employer for the majority of the period, before ceding its dominance to retail and healthcare by the end. Looking first at manufacturing and healthcare, these sectors became less prominent sources of employment over the period. The first two decades witness opposite trends across these two sectors. Specifically, manufacturing dominated the job market, with job numbers climbing from 15 million to a peak of 20 million in 1980. In contrast, agriculture saw a reduction from approximately 6 million to roughly 3 million over the same time frame. The rest of the period documented a general decline across both sectors. While a consistent plummet to nearly 13 million was seen in manufacturing, those in agriculture levelled off from 1998 to 2000, prior to a slight decline to about 2 million in 2000, leaving this sector the smallest job provider among all industries examined. In contrast, retail and healthcare expand their share of the job markets over time. Initially, retail was the larger job provider of the two, supplying about 6 million jobs compared to roughly 2.5 million jobs in healthcare. Over the next forty years, both sectors experienced a considerable growth of approximately 9 million jobs. By the end of the period, retail jobs had reached nearly 16 million, while healthcare had also recorded an increase, but to a greater extent, to reach parity with retail. Finally, both sectors became the leading job providers by overtaking manufacturing.
