Some people say that the main purpose of school is to turn children into good citizens and workers, rather than to benefit them as individuals. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Word count: 307

Introduction

There is a school of thought that the primary function of school is to educate children into responsible citizens and productive workers, rather than discover their personal strengths. From my perspectives, I partially disagree with the given statement since an ideal traditional environment has to strike a balance between individual and societal interests.

Body

It is undoubtedly obvious that formal schooling plays a vital role in developing civic awareness and preparing students for the workforce. By providing students with several moral lessons from civic education, schools can significantly educate the youth how to behave well in real life. Since students have numerous chances to turn theory into practice by communicating with peers, teachers and school’s staff, they could instill moral values and become responsible citizens in the future. Additionally, through extracurricular activities and career orientation sessions, students could remarkably enhance several soft skills such as communication and presentation skills, which are highly valued in professional environments. As a result, these students can make a more direct contribution to society.

Despite the aforementioned merits to society, traditional education also provides individuals numerous benefits. By having a great chance to expose themselves to numerous subjects such as science, literature or talent-related subjects, students can find their actual interests. Consequently, they can freely pursue personal aspirations, which provides intrinsic motivation, fostering self-actualisation and personal fulfilment. Furthermore, formal schooling helps students to cultivate creativity and develop critical thinking via competitions and additional activities. Therefore, educational environments would foster a holistic education, which not only benefits the whole society but also individuals.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while formal schooling’s goals are cultivating civic responsibility and developing job-ready graduates, which provide the society with such great advantages, academic institutions also act as an incentive for students to nurture individual talents and enhance soft skills. I strongly believe that schooling has to balance academic and personal growth.
