The evolution of social media has enabled individuals to maintain relationship and keep abreast of new events. Although there are certain drawbacks to this use, I contend that there are more benefits. This essay will first discuss that people can be crammed with fake news and second, how people can keep in touch with others and update news.

Admittedly, concerns over reliability of online news hold merit. This is because young people and elderly who are highly impressionable cannot distinguish between fake news and real ones. A lot of businesses and sponsors may take advantage of this fact, releasing misleading news for their economic promotion or just confusing local people. In Vietnam, for instance, people are often exposed to a significant amount of news owing to overreliance on social media, resulting in them being confused or money loss.

On the other hand, online platforms allow people to communicate with their relatives, friends and families despite distance. With internet accessed, people can easily interact with others and have a face-to-face conversation, which is incredibly convenient for abroad students or overseas commuters. It also contributes to saving time and money previously allocated to travelling, partially minimizing people's expenditure.

As for gaining knowledge about global events and worldwide changes, it is also helpful. Since governments and prestigious organizations also develop their own websites for news updating, people can access to such sources of news and learn about new events in a safer and more credible way. As a result, they can keep themselve updated about new events at home without having to pursue newspapers.

To conclude, whereas using social media to stay connected and updated is risky as fake news are ubiquitous, people are able to broaden their knowledge with reliable websites and contact through far distance. Therefore, I firmly believe that the advantages social media offer overwhelmingly surpass the drawbacks.
