The issue of whether constructing high-rise apartments is an optimal way to meet the demand for housing has reignited heated debate in recent years. While building more tall apartment blocks provides more accommodation for individuals, I am firmly convinced that living in tall apartments has several disadvantages, as it is difficult for residents to evacuate during hazardous situations, threatening people’s safety.

It is understandable why some believe that the best way to meet the target for accommodation is erecting more high-rise apartments. Nowadays, as rapid population growth has become a global issue, the demand for housing has increased significantly, leading to a considerable rise in property prices. Therefore, building tall apartment blocks can provide more accommodation for a vast number of people who cannot afford private homes, addressing the housing demand. Adequate housing provides individuals with safety, comfort and stability, helping them focus on education, career development or personal growth rather than worrying about finding a place to live. As a result, residents living high-rise apartments may enhance their academic performance, job opportunities and productivity.＋

Despite the positive aspects of tall apartment blocks, I strongly argue that living in high-rise apartments may pose some threats to residents, especially during dangerous situations such as fires or earthquakes. People residing on higher floors rely heavily on elevators to travel between floors or escape the building in emergencies. However, during the life-threatening cases, the power may be cut off to ensure the safety of residents. Thus, it is highly difficult for dwellers on higher floors to evacuate the apartment in hazardous situations. For instance, numerous people have died in fires or other life-threatening situations because they cannot escape the high-rise building in time. Consequently, living in tall apartment blocks may raise safety concerns among dwellers.

In conclusion, although high-rise buildings may reduce pressure on housing market and provide home for many individuals, I firmly believe that residents may struggle to evacuate during emergencies, causing potential injuries or even deaths to dwellers.
