This essay will discuss both perspectives and explain why I believe that economic growth should continue, albeit in a more sustainable form.

On the one hand, it is understandable why some propose that economic growth is essential to eliminate poverty. The key rationale is that growing businesses create more jobs and help citizens earn a steady income, which improves their living standards. For example, when companies expand, they hire more local workers, giving low-income families a chance to lift themselves out of poverty. Secondly, economic growth generates government revenue through taxation. This additional funding can then be invested in essential public services such as healthcare, education and food assistance programs. On the other hand, proponents of halting economic growth often emphasise that rapid industrial development causes severe environmental damage. This argument is further fortified by the fact that factories, transportation, energy production rely heavily on fossil fuels, which release greenhouse gases and drive climate change. In addition, overexploiting natural resources like cutting down forests or overfishing not only damage ecosystems but may also threaten the long-term sustainability of human life itself.＋ Instead of choosing between poverty and environmental ruin, a more practical approach would be to pursue sustainable growth. The primary reason is that completely halting economic progress is unrealistic because people still need development to survive. Instead, Governments and businesses can adopt cleaner technologies, invest in renewable energy and enforce environmental regulations to minimise ecological damage. In this way, it is possible to continue improving living standards without causing irreversible harm to the planet.

In conclusion, while there are justifications for advocating economic growth to fight poverty, I would contend that pursuing growth in a sustainable and responsible way is the best solution for both humans and the planet.
