Some people believe that giving longer prison sentences is the best way to reduce crime. While others argue that there are better alternative ways to reduce it. Although longer prison sentences are suitable for significant crimes, I still agree with the latter opinion. In this essay, I will discuss both these perspectives and explain why I hold the latter view.

Giving longer prison sentences is beneficial for those who commit some dangerous crimes and need to be in prison longer than others. It can act as a deterrent for potential offenders and protect the public by keeping dangerous criminals away from society for longer. A person who commits a violent crime may pose a serious threat to the public if released after only a short sentence. Additionally, during a long prison sentence, offenders may have more opportunities to participate in rehabilitation programmes and receive psychological support. This can reduce the risk of reoffending and harming the public.

On the other hand, there are a wide range of alternative measures to solve this problem. People who commit minor crimes such as driving or pickpocketing are not necessary to be in prison. They can have some vocational training, counselling and also education which are more beneficial for them than spending several years in prison. By raising their awareness, they are less likely to return to crime as they have legitimate ways to earn a living on their own. Consequently, the risk of reoffending can be reduced in the long term.

In conclusion, although longer prison sentences are more suitable for dangerous criminals, which can protect the public in society, I still believe that alternative measures are more possible and have a long-term impact on society.
