The line graph illustrates how the average number of spectators attending top-level football matches in three different countries in Europe (Italy, England and Germany) changed between 1980 and 2004, measured in thousands of people. Overall, the average attendance in England and Germany increase significantly, while that of Italy decrease considerably throughout the period. It is noticeable that Germany attracted the most attendees in the final years. Looking first at England and Germany, these nations witnessed an upward trend over the years. England’s attendance fell slightly from around 26 thousand in 1980 to 23 thousand in 1986 before recovering to its inital figure in 1998 and surging to about 33 thousand in 2004. Although Germany’s figure declined remarkably from 25 thousand in 1986 to just 18 thousand six years later, it recovered and reached a peak of nearly 35 thousand in the final year, overtaking that of England and becoming the dominant country with the highest attendance. Turning to Italy, this country saw a downward trend over the period. At the beginning, the number of spetactos in Italy ranked first at 35 thousand, before climbing modestly to 37 thousand in 1986. However, this figure plummeted to just under 25 thousand in 2004. This drop made this country from the country with the highest number of attendees to the lowest among the countries shown.
