Essay

The given maps compared the overall layout of Shalton village in 1910 and its design a century later. Overall, the village experienced significant development, with the initial green space being reconstructed into residential areas and infrastructures for human demand. Regarding the 1910 blueprint, it is evident that there were three main roads shaping into a triangle, with High street being in the middle, while London and School roads situated either side. Located in the middle of their intersection was a large house, which is surrounded by trees, whereas Grocer, a residence and baker situated across the side of the high street. The post office lay in the north of the triangle, and the school and butcher situated along School road. Some houses were built in the north and south of the map. In the 2010 layout, green spaces were eliminated for more accommodation. Along the east and south sides saw the rise of more residents, while the western noticed the reconstruction of butcher into a supermarket with parking. The original shops along High street were replaced by a cafe and houses, while a bank was added to the north of the supermarket. The road system, school and post office remained unchanged through 100 years.
