Essay

The given maps compare the design of the South Wing of Walton Museum in 2008 and its layout in 4 years later. Overall, the museum experienced significant development in facilities over the 4-year-period, with a view to enhance visitors’ satisfaction. Regarding the 2008 blueprint, it is evident that there were two main floors, one of which was located underground. Visitors entered via a path situated on the left side of the map that was led directly to the entrance. The central section was a reception, and a reading room situated on its right. The underground storey was occupied by a special exhibition room laying right underneath the entrance, followed by a shop and a cloak room respectively, all of which were connected to the ground floor by stairs. In the 2012 map, the South Wing underwent noticeable innovation. The entrance was rearranged into a terrace and an entrance hall, while the reception area was now combined with the cloak room, making room for the relocation of the children play area. A new restaurant was built above the reception and cloakroom, while a self-service area with an exhibition room above was developed. The former stairs were now replaced by a lift, whereas the remaining sections saw no changes.
