Introduction

In today’s world, particularly in some nations, although bicycles bring advantages for both physical well-being and the environment, they are facing a significant reduction in use. This essay will shed light on the main factors behind this issue and provide several effective solutions.

Body

One major concern from this decline is the lack of bicycle lanes. More roads in urban areas are mainly built for other vehicles, such as motorbikes and cars, leading to a shortage of lanes for bicyclers. Therefore, they are likely to use mixed traffic lanes with these means of transport, posing potential accidents, especially during rush hours, forcing them to seek other alternatives to commute faster and safely. In addition, another main driver is the long distance. Because of the expansion of urbanization, roads have been widened and made more complex, resulting in a group of people who work or study far from their houses finding it difficult to commute. As a result, they have to use other vehicles to ensure they can arrive on time. For example, in Hanoi, a large number of vehicles are used for traveling during peak times that increase cyclists’ commuting time. Consequently, both factors contribute to the change in using types of transport to move.

However, there are some effective measures that should be implemented to address the phenomenon. Firstly, the governments should invest more funding in building more bike lanes to encourage residents to use bicycles. By introducing such infrastructure, cyclists may feel safer and more confident to commute, and it also prevents traffic accidents. Secondly, increasing taxes on fuel is also a practical way. As fuel becomes more expensive, many people may choose bicycles as a cheaper mean of transport, reducing the use of motorbikes or cars. For instance, in the Netherlands, many people choose bicycles as their primary types of transport because cycling is both economical and environmentally friendly, contributing to mitigating the pollution from car emissions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although the reduction in the use of bicycles is attributed to the lack of bike lanes and the long distance, allocating money to building bike lanes and imposing higher taxes might encourage individuals to utilize bicycles. By implementing these approaches, bicycles may be more prevalent and accessible in the future.
