The diagram illustrates the prevalence of telephone users per 1000 inhabitants across two categories in Africa from 1994 to 2004 annually. What is most striking when looking at the data is that both phone services saw subscribers increasing, with more noticeable growth being seen in mobile phone use. It is also important to note that from 2001 onwards, subscriptions to mobile phones exceeded those of fixed-line phones. Looking first at fixed-line phones, with a steady and gradual increase, the use of fixed-line telephony was initially recorded at 1.7 per 1000 inhabitants, which was significantly higher than the modest figure for mobile phones, standing at just 0.06. Subsequently, the former steadily and gradually rose, ending at 3.1 per 1000 inhabitants. This suggests a nearly two-fold rise overall. A more pronounced increase was observed in the penetration of the mobile phone. Despite its significant growth to 2 per 1000 inhabitants, mobile telephony remained less popular than fixed-line phones until 2000. However, one year later, it surpassed the latter, reaching 3, after which the mobile phone subscriptions finally rocketed to 8.8, representing an almost triple expansion of mobile adoption, compared to the 2001 figure.
