In today’s world, particularly in some nations, wearing western-style clothes, namely suits or jeans, has increasingly become more common than conventional clothes. This essay will shed light on the main factors behind this trend and explain why this phenomenon is detrimental for both the environment and culture.

One major concern from this trend is globalization. Because of the widespread dissemination of foreign mass media content, it promotes global lifestyles and values, making individuals be influenced by international norms. Therefore, they might drift away from local customs and traditional values. In addition, the fashion industry constantly introduces new fashion trends, stimulating consumers to purchase clothes frequently, especially teenagers who are likely to follow new things. As a result, this introduction leads to promoting consumerism. For instance, young people who love Hollywood films or western styles find them interesting when their favourite celebrities wear stylish clothes, attracting teenagers to imitate their idols. Consequently, both factors contribute to the popularity of this trend.

From my perspective, this issue has a negative impact on both the environment and cultural diversity. The first consequence is that when releasing new trends, many fashion businesses may exploit natural resources to meet the demand for manufacturing clothes, generating a large amount of textile waste and clothing, especially in fast fashion. Hence, this exploitation drives pollution and climate change. Additionally, because western styles become prevalent and surpass traditional styles, they diminish cultural distinctiveness and erode cultural heritage; they also weaken the sense of belonging that poses threats to traditional values. Take some young Vietnamese people as an example: when they start to wear western clothes, they tend to adopt western values and beliefs, which can lead to a potential danger to the erosion of local customs. Therefore, this phenomenon brings threats and dangers to the environment and cultural diversity.

In conclusion, because this trend is attributed to globalization and consumerism, it can threaten traditional values and the environment. By encouraging youngsters to wear local clothes, customs and cultures may develop further.
