The line graph shows the percentage of female members of parliament in five European countries from 2000 to 2012. Overall, female representation in parliament increased across all five nations. Although Italy made the most dramatic progress, Belgium ended up with the highest percentage of female MPs by the end of the period. In 2000, Germany had the highest percentage of female MPs at about 31%, followed by Spain (27%) and Belgium (23%). In contrast, the UK’s figure was about half of Germany's at 17%, while Italy had only 2.5% (more than 10 times lower than Germany). Over the next four years, Spain and Belgium increased quickly to 35%, passing Germany, which grew slightly to around 31.5%. Meanwhile, the UK and Italy stayed almost the same at 17% and 3%. Between 2004 and 2012, Italy grew very fast, jumping nearly eightfold to reach 23% in 2008 before staying unchanged until 2012. This was the same as the UK, which went up slowly to reach 23% in 2012. In the other group, Germany continued to rise slowly to 33%, while Spain remained stable at around 35%. Belgium stayed at 35% until 2008, then rose again to reach the highest point at nearly 38.5% in 2012.
