The bar chart illustrates estimated illiteracy rates of males and females across six world regions in the last year, measured in percentages. Overall, South Asia emerged as the region with the highest illiteracy rates, whereas the lowest levels were recorded in Developed Countries. Notably, a consistent trend was evident across almost all regions, with female illiteracy rates being higher than those of their male counterparts. Looking first at the top three regions, South Asia had the highest illiteracy rates, hitting 54% for females, compared with the male rate of approximately 34%.In the Arab States, the corresponding rates stood at 52% for females and 29% for males . Meanwhile, in Sub-Saharan Africa, the female illiteracy rate was recorded at 48%, compared with 31% for males. Turning to the remaining regions that reported lower illiteracy rates, Developed Countries recorded the lowest levels, with approximately 3% for both genders.The corresponding rates in Latin America/Caribbean were 12% for females,closely followed by its male counterpart, at roughly 10%. Meanwhile, East Asia/Oceania exhibited the most pronounced disparity, with the female illiteracy rate being approximately double that of the male rate, standing at 20% and 10%, respectively.
