The line chart illustrates how much carbon dioxide a person emitted on average in the UK, Sweden, Italy and Portugal over a 40-year period, from 1967 to 2007. Overall, it is evident that a downward trend was observed in the figures for the UK and Sweden, compared to those of Italy and Portugal witnessing an increase. In addition, the amounts of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK and Portugal retained their positions over the period as the largest and smallest categories, respectively. Looking first at countries with a downward trend, the average carbon emissions per person in the UK stood at 11 metric tonnes initially, remaining stable at the first ranked position in 10 years. From 1977 to 2007, the figure started dropping gradually to around 9 metric tonnes, still regarded as the highest. In terms of Sweden, which had a lower start at nearly 9 metric tonnes, its figure then grew slightly to over 10 metric tonnes in 1977, before a dramatic decrease to approximately 5,8 metric tonnes at the end of the period. Turning to the remaining countries, each individual in Italy averagely emitted above 4 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide at first, growing moderately to beyond 6 metric tonnes after a decade, With a subsequent steady rise until 1977, the figure exceeded the Sweden’s level at about 7,8 metric tonnes in the same year, after which held a plateau onwards. A similar pattern was shown in Portugal when its record in average carbon dioxide emissions per person rose steadily from roughly 1,2 metric tonnes in 1967 to 5,8 metric tonnes in 2007, meeting the ending point of Sweden.
