Essay

The bar chart illustrates how six primary subjects were distributed across different genders at a particular university in the US in 2010. Overall, the marketing and accounting categories received more female participation than their male counterparts, while economics and mathematics followed the opposite pattern, as they were favoured by more males than females. It is also notable that finance and engineering were evenly distributed between the two genders, with the former being the most commonly chosen subject overall. As for the majors preferred by females, slightly below 130 female students studied marketing, while the corresponding figure for males was an estimated 80. Accounting followed a similar pattern, with approximately 200 female students compared with 170 men. Regarding subjects more preferred by males, mathematics was the predominant major, where around 200 male students chose to study, which was nearly four times the figure for females. It was also the category that recorded the greatest disparity between the two genders. This gap was considerably smaller in economics, with precisely 150 male students, twice as high as the respective figure for females. Finally, finance and engineering recorded an equal distribution between the two genders, with the former dominating the chart at roughly 230 students each. Meanwhile, the latter attracted just over 50 participants apiece and was also the least popular major in the chart.
