The line chart illustrates how the proportion of female members of parliament in five European nations changed between 2000 and 2012. Overall, the percentage of female serving as members of parliament in all five countries experienced an upward trajectory from 2000 to 2012. In addition, the country with the highest female parliamentarians was Germany at the start of the period; however, the figure of that in the UK was the lowest category throughout the period. Regarding the three highest categories, the proportion of women in parliament of Italy and France started at around 27 and roughly 25 respectively. The former was the second highest percentage initially, but it surpassed the figure of Germany in nearly 2010, making it became the largest group with just under 40% at the end of the period. The latter reached its highest level on record at approximately 37 in 2004. By contrast, Germany’s figure stayed unchanged over the period from 2000 to 2012, just increased slightly to over 35% by 2012. In terms of the remaining categories, the percentage of female working as parliamentarians in Belgium witnessed a significant increase from around 17 to approximately 28 throughout the period. Meanwhile, the figure of the UK dramatically rose from just under 5% to the same percentage of Belgium towards the end of the period.
