The line graphs illustrate how demand for steel and the employment of this industry changed in UK from 1970 to 2000. Overall, the UK witnessed a downward trend in total demand and production for steel, whereas import demand underwent a rising trend. Moreover, employment in the steel industry declined in this period. To specify, in 1970, total demand for steel was 200 thousand tonnes, about 40000 tonnes higher than that for production. In the following years, both demand and supply for steel experienced a decrease in numbers, but in a different pattern. While steel production fell steadily, its demand dropped slightly from 1970 to 1980, then decreased sharply in the next 10 years and remained stable until 2000 at 100000 tonnes, about 3000 tonnes higher than its production in 2000. Besides that, the number of UK steel imports stood at only 15000 tonnes in 1970 and then went constantly up to 70000 tonnes in 2000. Moreover, the UK workforce in this field also fell over the time examined. There were 50000 employees in 1970, the highest number recorded in this period. Then the number of workers fell sharply in the next 20 years before staying stable at 18000 people in 2000.
