The diagrams illustrate how a modern landfill for household waste is constructed, used and eventually closed. Generally, as can be seen from the process there are 3 main stages. First hold is construction and then put some layers under the hole. In the next step, the hole is filled fully with household waste and is then closed. Finally, gases are released through a pipe. During the construction, a deep man-made hole is excavated in an area of natural rock. The inside of this hole is first covered with a layer of clay and then with synthetic lining which prevents waste liquid from entering the surrounding area. After that , a series of drainage pipes is installed along the bottom and connected to a drainage tank under the hole. Turning to the uses of landfill, trucks deposit household waste into the prepared hole. When the waste accumulates, liquid produced flows downward and goes through the drainage pipes. It is then carried into the tank at the base of landfill to prevent soil contamination. In the final step, a thick layer of clay is used to cover the filled hole and a large pipe is added into the landfill with one end facing the hole and one end facing the outside. Therefore, the gas produced from waste can escape safely after the landfill has been closed.
