Opinions vary regarding how educational institutions should organize classes. Some suggest that schools should group students based on their academic performance, while others believe that mixed-ability classes can yield more beneficial outcomes. While I acknowledge the rationale underlying both perspectives, I assert that the more effective approach is to arrange performance-based classes alongside mixed-ability ones, as it helps prevent discrimination and foster learning progress across all students.

On the one hand, supporters of ability-based grouping may argue that this model can enable more efficient teaching. When students in the same class perform at a broadly similar level, teachers can select materials and set the pace that aligns with their common needs. As a result, advanced learners are less likely to become disengaged by repetitive content, while less proficient students are less likely to be overwhelmed by the lessons that exceed their current ability. A further justification for this approach may concern exceptionally gifted students, who may master the standard curriculum considerably faster compared to their peers. Some people may argue that assigning these students to specialized classes allows schools to provide more tailored materials that enable intellectual stimulation and fulfil their potential. Nevertheless, large-scale ability grouping may unintentionally be perceived as a form of discrimination. Students placed at lower streams can easily become labelled as less capable, which may damage their confidence and reinforce negative stereotypes about their academic capabilities. At the same time, separating students into distinct ability groups may reduce the opportunities for interactions between stronger and weaker learners, potentially creating social divisions and distancing them from one another.For those reasons, I assert that mixed-ability classrooms are essential for the sake of the majority of students, even though they may not fully meet the demands of exceptionally talented learners. Specifically, students whose performance falls only slightly below the required standard can benefit from studying with more capable classmates. By observing different learning strategies, receiving peer support, and working towards higher but attainable expectations, they are provided with the leverage they need to close the performance gap.＋ Furthermore, heterogeneous classes foster a more inclusive learning environment by encouraging meaningful interaction between students of various academic abilities. As learners work and study together, they are more likely to develop mutual respect and empathy instead of forming stereotypes based on academic performance. Consequently, this approach helps strengthen students’ sense of belonging while reducing the social barriers that may arise from widespread ability grouping.

In conclusion, although the division of classes according to students’ performance offers practical implications, its benefits are mostly for the more advanced learners. Classes comprising students of different abilities are generally more advantageous for a wider range of learners thanks to the opportunities and support provided by this model. Therefore, I maintain that mixed-ability classrooms should remain the mainstream model, while specialized classes should be reserved for students with genuinely exceptional academic ability.
