A prevailing contention is that economic growth is necessary for reducing global poverty and famine. Others, however, argue that it might pose some serious threats on the environment. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I find the latter view more convincing.

On the one hand, it is understandable that a prosperous economy can tackle financial difficulties and hunger of a nation. In this day and age, many developing countries are struggling with their poor education, healthcare and other social factors due to a lack of money. However, when these countries have an enormous budget, they can allocate it to different aspects of society. Indeed, they can import food and provide citizens with necessary household appliances which are the most vital action to deal with poverty and hunger. As a result, living conditions and quality of life can be improved due to economic growth since it supports to eliminate global issues. Nevertheless, it is just purely a quick solution for a short period. If a country with the good economy cannot develop and tackle the root cause of these issues for the future, they would likely happen again with a more serious effect. On the other hand, in the long term, the rapid growth of economy might be detrimental for the environment. This can be explained by the fact that developing countries are a potential industrial zone to develop due to the cheap labor workforce. Several developed nations can make use of this via international collaborations. They will construct factories and develop facilities in these countries and offer career opportunities for the domestic citizens. Foreign business might need an enormous source of workers in order to acquire better productivity. Thus, both countries have their own benefits in terms of finances.. However, with all these rapid development in industrialization, it might be harmful to the environment as the activities there. There will be an increasing amount of carbon emissions, green house gases released into the environment because of the factories. Although they might have polices to prevent environmental degradation, the valuable opportunities to make more money might be ineffective. The industrial activities might grow stronger which contribute to more severe climate change when the excessive consumption of fossil fuels and the release of carbon fumes still happen.

In conclusion, the greater economy of a country might reduce hunger and level of poverty by international collaborations for industrial uses. It not only tackles these global issues but also enhance people’s quality of life. However, I consider this trend is much more significant. Since rapid industrialization which improve the economy can also pose a serious threat to environment in terms of superflous unrenewable energy consumption and excessive industrial activities.
