It is widely believed that it is essential for governments to introduce laws regarding a period of community service for young people before high school graduation. However, other people claim that this period should be voluntary, rather than compulsory. In this essay, both views will be analyzed before proposing my own statement that students should have a chance to choose whether they want to participate or not.

On the one hand, there are some reasons why taking part in community service in young people. First of all, this service can create a strong sense of responsibility among students before graduation. Community service may involve taking care of the elderly in hospitals, cleaning up residential streets, or educating poor children. Such activities help students gain more exposure to different kinds of people in society, including those who come from disadvantaged areas, which enhance the urge for social contribution among students. Those disadvantaged people, with that thorough support, would be more optimistic about lifetime, thus contributing to society as the students do. As a result, community service can have a pervasive effect and be beneficial for both the students and people they supported.

However, it is not essential for governments to introduce laws about forcing all students to participate in community service. Perhaps the most important drawback is that compulsory community service makes the students lose their freedom and create unnecessary burden on them. Students have a tendency to become much busier in their last school years due to the pressure of academic achievements associated with future orientations, which are really demanding. If governments really imposed laws to force students take part in community service, students would not have enough time to fulfill their obligations carefully. Forcing can also have a negative impact on students’ perception about social support, since they have to enroll in without any tangible influence on their own life. Consequently, community service should be treated as a voluntary activity, where students take part in because of their enthusiasm, rather than a compulsory subject, as it can sometimes be counterproductive if not properly implemented.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that community service should be voluntary for students before their graduation. If forcing, not only it would create unnecessary pressure on students, but it also loses the true values of communal support. Therefore, governments should encourage students to join, rather than imposing an compulsory activity.
