Introduction
Body
To begin with, there are several compelling reasons why individuals are inclined to ride bicycles less than they were in the past. First and foremost, this could be attributed to the great emphasis of people on convenience and speed. These days, as citizens have to commute long distances to work or school, cycling could no longer be practical due to the substantial amount of time and physical effort required. Therefore, although bicycles are environmentally friendly, people would prefer more comfortable and faster vehicles such as buses, private cars or motorbikes. To illustrate, instead of spending 30 minutes cycling 10km to work and getting exhausted in the hot sun, taking the bus takes only 10 minutes and offers cool air conditioning. Another rationale is the lack of safe infrastructure. Since urban roads are predominantly designed for motor vehicles, cyclists face significant safety risks and hazardous collisions. This lack of dedicated lanes deeply discourages individuals from choosing bicycles as their daily mode of transport.
Several measures can be taken to address this problem in order to attract more cyclists. First and foremost, the governments should encourage behavioural changes through public campaigns. It is individuals who drive real change; thus, it is imperative to educate the public on environmental preservation, the physical advantages of cycling and detrimental effects of car fumes, encouraging people to adopt cycling as a regular mode of transport. A prime example of this is the “Cycling for a Green City” campaign, organised by Hanoi authorities in 2024, attracted over 2000 cyclists, effectively raising people’s awareness about the environmental and health benefits of using bikes. Moreover, it is necessary for the national leaders to establish a comprehensive cycling network. This could be handled by upgrading and constructing safe cycling routes, creating safer conditions for road users, thereby avoiding unexpected accidents for cyclists.+
Conclusion
In conclusion, the declining popularity of cycling stems primarily from the demand for faster transportation and the lack of safe road infrastructure. However, this issue can be effectively tackled through public awareness campaigns and the construction of dedicated cycling networks.
